Introduction to Module 4 – Accompanying Animal Grief

This training module aims to equip Grief Coaches to provide a compassionate and tailored support to people grieving the loss of their pet. Through various sub-modules, we will explore the key skills needed to create a safe space, encourage emotional expression, and support the process of resilience.

We will first discuss the posture of the Grief Coach, characterized by empathy, non-judgment, and congruence. We will then look at how to establish a strong therapeutic alliance, by nurturing the welcome, active listening, and the co-construction of goals.

The module will also delve into the interview and communication techniques unique to this form of support, as well as the tools to legitimize and normalize grief responses. Particular attention will be given to exploring the value and belief system, as well as working on resources and resilience.

Finally, we will address the management of intense emotions, the prevention and detection of grief complications, and the referral to other professionals when necessary. The goal is to train Grief Coaches capable of providing comprehensive and adjusted support, in collaboration with a network of partners.

Throughout this module, concrete examples will illustrate the concepts discussed and facilitate their appropriation. Trainees will be invited to reflect on their practice and experiment with the proposed tools, in a reflective and integrative approach.

At the end of this training, participants will have acquired the essential skills to professionally and humanely support people going through animal grief. They will be able to create a safe and supportive space, promoting resilience and sense-making after the loss of a beloved four-legged friend.
