Introduction to Module 1 – Introduction to Grief
Welcome to this training module devoted to the introduction to grief. Through this module, we will explore the key concepts of grief, its manifestations and the factors that influence the grief process.
We will start by defining grief as a natural and universal reaction to the loss of a loved one. We will see that despite its universal nature, grief remains a unique and personal experience for each individual.
Next, we will discuss the different theoretical models that help us better understand the grief process, such as Kübler-Ross’s stages or Worden’s tasks. We will see how these models provide a framework to apprehend the emotional, cognitive and behavioral reactions that mark the journey of grief.
We will also explore the diversity of types of grief depending on the nature of the loss and the relationship. We will see that certain griefs, such as parental grief, perinatal grief or traumatic grief, have specificities that can complicate the process.
We will also address the normal manifestations of grief and the risk factors that can foster the emergence of complicated grief. We will learn how to recognize these complications to offer appropriate care.
Finally, we will broaden our perspective by exploring the cultural and societal dimensions of grief. We will see how the representations of death, rites and social codes around grief vary according to cultures and influence the individual and collective experience of loss.
The objective of this module is to provide you with theoretical knowledge and markers to better understand and accompany the grief process in its complexity and diversity. We hope that it will allow you to acquire a vision that is both global and nuanced of this universal experience that is grief.
