Module 2 – The stages of grief and emotional responses

Grief is a complex and non-linear process that manifests itself differently for each individual. However, there are common stages and emotional reactions frequently seen in bereaved individuals. Understanding these stages and reactions is essential for the GRIEF COACH, as it enables them to provide tailored support and normalize the client’s experience.

In this module, we will explore in detail the five stages of grief model developed by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, which is one of the most well-known and widely used in the field. We will see how these stages – denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance – manifest in individuals going through grief, and how they fit into the healing process.

We will also discuss common emotional reactions to grief, such as shock, sadness, guilt, fear and loneliness. We will see how these emotions can be expressed differently according to individuals and how the GRIEF COACH can help clients welcome and go through them.

It’s important to note that the stages of grief are not experienced linearly and each person can navigate these stages in a unique way. Some people may stay longer in a stage, while others may skip some or return to earlier ones. The role of the GRIEF COACH is to support clients in their personal journey, without imposing rigid timelines or expectations.

We will also explore individual differences in the grief process and the factors that can influence how each person experiences this journey. Personality, culture, religion, the nature of the relationship with the deceased, and the circumstances of the loss are all elements that can shape grief in a unique way.

By understanding the stages of grief and common emotional reactions, the GRIEF COACH can provide empathetic support tailored to each client’s needs. They can help bereaved individuals to normalize their experience, find coping strategies, and move towards healing at their own pace.

In this module, we will lay the theoretical and practical foundations to understand and support different manifestations of grief. Through exploring the stages, emotional responses and individual differences, we will develop the necessary skills to provide compassionate and effective support for those grieving.
